This project explores an approach to souvenir and the
structure of memory. The subject
of the project was an apartment in Avignon, constructed in the 1970¡¯s. The
government of Avignon planned to demolish the building; and so this video was
filmed just before the date of the building¡¯s demolition in 2001. Since
they wanted to use explosives to demolish the building, the doors to every
room were removed. The fact that
this apartment building had no doors was essential to the concept of the
project. Because
there were no doors, there were also no numbers identifying the apartments;
and no indication of the identity of each space. The
apartment was a kind of 3-D labyrinth, physically and psychologically. The experience of loosing myself in
the apartment gave me a sensation of an overreaching, residual memory. After
filming, I edited the material to be projected onto 3 screens. These 3 screens were conceived to represent a
3-dimensional axis: one on the vertical y-axis; one on the horizontal x-axis;
and the third on the z-axis, vertically situated. |
